Dr. Pogue Volunteers to Help At-Risk High School
Students Through Jobs for Arizona’s Graduates

Phoenix, AZ — May 25, 2010 — Dr. Pogue, CEO of Complete Consulting, Inc., spent a day helping young adults hone their public speaking skills at the Jobs for Arizona’s Graduates (JAG) 2010 Career Development Conference. The event was held April 28 at the Mesa Convention Center in Mesa, Arizona. More than 600 participants — high school students from public schools throughout Arizona — attended.

“Volunteering to help these young people develop their skills offered a way for me to give back to the community,” says Dr. Pogue, who resides in Arizona. “It was a wonderfully personal and inspiring opportunity centered on learning.”

An award-winning affiliate of the national Jobs for America’s Graduates, JAG helps at-risk students graduate high school and transition into productive careers or post-secondary education. The 2010 Leadership Conference, the capstone of the academic year program, attracted more than 30 volunteers from all sectors of the community: employers, government officials, elected representatives, and educators.

“Our volunteers play a major role in validating what we teach all year long,” says JAG Chapter President Graciela Garcia Candia. “They come in from the outside and say, ‘Yes, you can,’ to our students. They share their stories and offer living proof that it’s possible to eliminate barriers and succeed.”

The annual Career Development Conference provides a forum to recognize student leadership and achievements, as well as to showcase their skills to potential employers. Dr. Pogue volunteered as competitive event judge for public speaking, an individual event in which students gave a three-minute prepared speech on the topic of their personal journeys.

“Listening to what these young people have been through was very moving,” says Dr. Pogue. “For each of them to stand up and talk about his or her life was admirable. It took a lot of courage, and now they know they can do it.”

Serving more than 1,000 students each year, JAG posts statistics well above national averages. This year, during the in-school phase of the program, 100% of participants attended school and 97% graduated, more than half with improved GPAs. A record 60% intend to pursue post-secondary education.
