Dr. Laura Pogue Promotes Online Education at Phoenix, AZ Chapter of National Women’s Organization

Phoenix, AZ — November 3, 2009 — Dr. Laura Pogue, Chief Executive Officer of Complete Consulting, Inc., a leader in online education for colleges and universities, spoke with the Phoenix chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) at their monthly business dinner meeting, Tuesday, October 20, 2009. A full house of AAUW chapter leaders and members were in attendance.

“The Phoenix chapter of the AAUW is a committed group on educators who care passionately about educating women,” says Dr. Pogue. “That’s their mission. Through their gracious invitation to speak, I was able to share my experiences of the power of online education to help achieve that goal.”

During her presentation, Dr. Pogue shared current research and data from a variety of educational, governmental, and economic sources, including the 2009 US Department of Education report evaluating online learning. The report examined more than 1,000 studies of online learning from 1996 through 2008 and concluded that, “On average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction.”

“The US Department of Education report confirms what those of us at the forefront of online education already know from experience,” says Dr. Pogue. “Online education has entered the mainstream and there is no turning back. That’s because the medium offers clear advantages across various content and learner types. More so, online education is accessible, affordable, and fits into adults’ busy lifestyles — especially women’s.”

On the business side, the numbers also prove compelling. The educational market is far from saturated — only 29.4 percent of the US population older than age 25 holds a bachelor’s degree or higher, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Furthermore, demand for educated professionals in the US workforce is high and expected to increase across all postsecondary degree types. The mean income for a worker with an associate’s degree is $39,724 annually. With a bachelor’s degree, that number jumps to $56,788; with a master’s degree, $70,358.

“Adults in the US are eager to improve their education and their earnings,” says Dr. Pogue. “What is so exciting is that those two trends converge in online education. Online education truly has the potential to become ‘the next great equalizer’ for many types of students in the United States, especially women.”

“It’s extremely important to me to share this information with other educators,” continues Dr. Pogue. “We need to stay current on emerging trends if we expect to help women achieve their ambitions for equity in education, in the workplace, and in compensation equality. Online education is one more tool to help women become and stay competitive.”
