Dr. Pogue Volunteers at the JAG 2012 Career Development Conference

Phoenix, AZ - April 19, 2012 - For the third year in a row, Dr. Pogue, Distance Education Specialist, served as a competitive event judge at the public speaking skills event at the Jobs for Arizona's Graduates (JAG) 2012 Career Development Conference. The event was held April 19, 2012 at the Sheraton Crescent Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona. More than 400 high school students from public schools throughout Arizona attended.

The capstone of the academic year program, the Career Development Conference provides a forum to recognize student achievements, and offers students the chance to demonstrate their skills to potential employers. Students engaged in a number of individual and team competitive events to display their mastery of JAG Career Development competencies.

"The three-minute public speaking format gives students a podium from which to share their personal stories while showcasing their skills," says Dr. Pogue. "They must learn to be concise and clear in their language, as well as develop the poise and confidence to speak before a panel of professional judges."

These skills encapsulate what JAG in-class and extracurricular programming offers at-risk youth in Arizona: not just support in achieving academic success, but also ways to strengthen the personal, leadership, and vocational skills they need to be successful in college and in life.

Each year, JAG serves approximately 1,500 students in grades 6 through 12. Over the past six years, the high school graduation rate of JAG participants has been 95 percent. Over the same span, 87 percent of JAG graduates have gone on to accept jobs in the private sector, to serve in the military, or to continue their education within one year of completing the program.

"Through this event, volunteer judges and mentors help students realistically assess their capabilities and come to believe in the value of what they have to offer," says Dr. Pogue. "As potential college students, employees, and leaders, students recognize that they have much to offer in whatever future path they choose."
